My native language is not English. What do I need to do?

All prospective international students, whose native language is not English, applying for admission to the City Colleges are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and submit a TOEFL test score as a requirement of the application process. Please note that students from countries listed here are exempt from the TOEFL exam.

 

My native language IS English, do I still need to take the TOEFL?

Students from countries listed here are exempt from the TOEFL exam.

 

Once I take the TOEFL exam, how do I submit the results?

TOEFL test scores must be submitted directly to the appropriate Admissions Office by the Education Testing Service.

 

What is the minimum TOEFL test score?

The minimum TOEFL test score for admission to the Credit Program is written 450, computer based 133 and internet-based score of 45.

 

Will I be tested on my academic skills?

Yes, as part of the registration process, all international students must also undergo assessment of their academic skills.

 

Are copies of transcripts accepted?

No, notarized or true copies of academic transcripts must be transmitted from secondary school or college. A certified evaluation of academic records (English translation is necessary) is required.

Who is eligible to sponsor me? What forms do they need to complete? What additional financial documents does my sponsor need to provide?

A notarized INS Form I-134 affidavit of support is required. Certified bank letter of verification. Sponsor must show a minimum of $15,000 U.S. in his/her account. If self-sponsored, student must show a minimum of $30,000 U.S. in his/her account. Employment verification letter. Sponsor must show a minimum of $30,000 U.S. per year.

 

Is there an application fee?

A $100 non-refundable certified check or money order application fee.

 

Do I need health insurance?

Yes, you must provide proof of health insurance or purchase health insurance through City Colleges of Chicago campuses.

 

How many credit hours per semester am I required to take?

To maintain an F-1 student Visa status, the minimum full time course load required is 12 hours. You are allowed to stay in the USA for as long as you are enrolled as a full-time student in an educational program and you are making normal progress toward completing your course of study.

 

*Note* Applications will not be considered unless fully completed and a TOEFL score report is in the student's record.
