Welton T. Murphy - KKC Dir. Of Admissions Welton Murphy Jr. grew up in the Englewood community. He attended public school and graduated from Parker High School (Robeson). He served four years in the United States Air Force where he obtained the rank of sergeant before his honorable discharge. He worked at Kennedy-King College in 1975 in the Registrar’s Office with a program known then as CETA run by the Mayor’s Office. He worked full time and attended Kennedy-King full time, majoring in Liberal Arts. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society and is currently a national alum. He graduated with honors from Kennedy-King College in 1977. Mr. Murphy received his Masters in Business Administration from Governors State University in 1988. Mr. Murphy began his professional career at the place where he was an academic star—KKC. In 1978 he was hired in a full time clerical position in the Registrar’s Office. Since 1985, he has been Director of Admissions and Recruitment at the school. One of his primary duties is making information about Kennedy-King College available to prospective students in as far away areas as Africa and as close as our immediate community. He is responsible for the assessment of new student credentials for accuracy and completion. He also manages the establishment of the appropriate records and files for new students. He spends a lot of time talking to elementary, high school, agencies, parents, and businesses about the educational opportunities available at Kennedy-King College. In 2003, his job title was changed to Project Coordinator of Admissions and Recruitment. Mr. Murphy has won numerous academic and service awards, such as Jaycee Member of the year 1980 and Outstanding Young Men of America Award 1982. He has also served on the Board of Directors for West Englewood Neighborhood Housing Services from 1983 thru 1988. Mr. Murphy credits his accomplishments to help from God and his parents. In particular, his mother made an effort to teach him the importance of a good education and to respect others. From these teachings, grew the ability to stay motivated, have faith, and the desire to want as must for humanity as he wants for himself. |
