![]() | Programs Bricklaying Students will receive hands-on training on the building of solid walls, chimneys using brick and block and a range of bonds. Students will also use brick to build arches; setting out and positioning of doors and window openings. Students will also learn basic blueprint reading. (16 credit hours) Cost: $2,093.00 (includes tuition,fees and materials) Carpentry Program The Carpentry Program is designed to train students in all phases of house construction. Training includes layout and framing of walls, footings, foundations and stairs, as well as interior and exterior trim and roof shingling. Theory and practical hands-on applications are emphasized through the construction of a model house. Scaffold Safety Certification and 10-Hour OSHA Construction Certification. Students can earn a Basic Certificate in either interior carpentry and/or exterior carpentry. Students who successfully complete both the interior and exterior carpentry programs will receive an Advanced Certificate (in addition to the Basic Certificates). Graduates find employment as entrepreneurs, apprentice trainees, installers, or sales associates. (37 credit hours) Cost: $72.00 per credit hour Welding Program This program is designed to provide students with basic welding skills. Students are taught ARC, MIG, and TIG welding, all positions. Plasma and oxy-gas cutting are also taught. In addition, students examine job safety, ethics, and metallurgy. Graduates find entry-level employment as welders, solderers, and braziers. (16 credit hours) Cost: $2,100.00 (includes tuition, fees and materials) Concrete Masonry Training consists of an orientation to cement masonry and hands-on training including: tool recognition and proper uses, job safety, trade terminology, building a toolbox and maintenance of concrete tools. Students will learn basic ingredients of concrete, placing, rodding and floating, basic set-up and form work and clean-up. Student will complete a project. Scaffold Safety Certification and 10-Hour OSHA Construction Certification. Classes meet five days a week for twelve weeks. (16 credit hours) Cost: $1,978.00 (includes tuition, fees and materials) Drain Layers License Preparation Seminar This is a two half-day seminar for contractors who wish to obtain a City of Chicago Drain Layers License. Contractors will acquire the required technical drain layer information from industry experts to become knowledgeable about city licensing requirements, health and safety, fair market pricing practices, and providing quality customer service. Contractors will attend on-site demonstrations at the City of Chicago Water & Sewer Department Training Center. Contractors can sit for the City's Drain Layer's Licensing Examination after completion of training. The course is a comprehensive skill-building session that meets federal industry guidelines. Class meets for one 4-hour session. Cost: $100.00 Contact: Charity Loving - 773.451.2069 General Educational Development (GED) The Adult Education Program at Dawson Technical Institute offers classes to students who wish to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, and/or to prepare for the GED examination. All classes are tuition-free to eligible students. Students enrolled in GED classes do not earn college credit. Admissions GED classes are open to adults, age 18 or older, who do not have a high school diploma. Students who are 17 years of age may enroll only if they are not attending a traditional high school. These students must provide one of the following documents for admittance into the GED program.
Residency Students who reside outside the City of Chicago may not enroll in the GED program unless they have proper documentation of employment or childcare services within the City. Students who reside outside the State of Illinois are not eligible for enrollment. Enrollment Students who wish to enroll are required to participate in GED orientation, take a placement test, complete an admissions data form and outcome form, and may be asked to provide additional documentation. Students may enroll in adult education classes at only one of the City Colleges of Chicago in any one semester. Courses It is important to note that students are placed in classes depending upon the results of their placement test. Accordingly, some students may only need to take a few courses, while others may need more. Students receive hands-on instruction in home carpentry, plumbing, electrical, safety, and review of city licensing requirements for operating a home remodeling business. Students can choose to focus on a specific skill area such as carpentry, or can attend all classes to receive a certificate of recognition. Cost: $72.00 per sequence, plus fees and materials Plumbing & Fire Protection This is a 12-week training program to introduce students to plumbing and sprinkler systems. Students will be taught in the classroom and shop environment, with theory and hands-on applications. Students successfully completing these courses will be able to work as a plumber's and fitter's assistant. Scaffold Safety Certification and 10-Hour OSHA Construction Worker Certification. Successful completers will be recommended for acceptance into the Chicago Sprinkler's Apprentice Program. Classes meet five times per week. (16 credit hours) Cost: $2,097.00 (includes tuition, fees and materials) Scaffold Safety This course provides scaffold users with the regulations, safety guidelines, and procedures needed to recognize and eliminate hazards in the field. Individuals completing this course will have satisfied the City of Chicago's safety requirement for scaffold users. Class meets for one 4-hour session. Cost: $125.00 OHSA 10-Hour Construction Worker Certification This course reviews standard safety and health principles. It provides information that prepares students to recognize and control a variety of hazardous conditions. Upon completion of the course, attendees will receive a course completion card issued by OSHA. Class meets for two consecutive Fridays.
