SMALL BUSINESS PROCUREMENT & CONTRACT COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Small Business Procurement and Contracts Course is for emerging adult business leaders with at least three years experience as entrepreneurs. This entrepreneur management training offers insight into the opportunities available for small businesses with interests in the top business opportunities locally including those associated with the Olympics. The course trains business leaders to win major contracts. The course covers the government procurement process, corporate contract development, competitive bidding, risk minimization, cash-flow management, and sales-oriented networking. We will also have session focused on urban development and neighborhood revitalization.
Course Goals
- Encourage the development of well managed small businesses.
- Increase the number of small businesses in Chicago that can competently and competitively participate in procurement processes.
- Provide a candid look at top-business opportunities in both the public and private sectors.
- Increase the capabilities of the business owners/managers to expand and manage their companies.
- Help the business community understand their potential role in improving the local economy, influencing neighborhood development, and sustaining urban growth.
Instructors collectively build an environment which interactively introduces concepts and business models. Each participant will receive the support needed to develop their business strategies as well as operational models.

- Use winning systems for identifying the best business opportunities and diversifying revenue streams based upon sound market predictions.

- Create a personalized strategic approach to navigating complex procurement systems and processes.
- Know the best practices and business models for building infrastructures that will lead to expanded sales.
- Leverage supplier diversification efforts and avoid the pitfalls of businesses.
- Learn how to take advantage of future business prospects related to the Olympics, O’Hare Modernization Project, and other major sector improvements in Chicago.
Our training includes:
- Presentations made by procurement and contracts experts
- Open panel discussions with current and former policy makers
- Seminars with successful business owners
- Case study session with the people that influenced the successful transformation of Atlanta for the Olympics
- Mock-networking sessions designed to help you improve your ability to build a professional network of contacts
Any deviations from the course schedule will be announced by the program manager in class if necessary.
Course participants are responsible for devoting the time and effort necessary to illustrate mastery of the material covered. Program staff and instructors will provide additional support as requested to aid in the development of each emerging business leader registered for the course. Participants that are able to satisfactorily pass all quizzes with an average of at least 75% and attend 80% or more of the course sessions will earn a certificate of completion.
Course Registration & Enrollment
Registration before the course begins is encouraged as space is limited. Registration can be done online at kennedyking.edu or interested business leaders may call our staff at (773) 451-2089 to arrange for registration. Tuition is $250. There are a limited number of scholarships available. To apply, complete the scholarship/application form found online.
On the first day of the course, all registration and enrollment forms must be completed. At that time, tuition will be collected. Once the registration and payment process are completed, then the business leader will be admitted into the course. Business leaders may reserve a space for the course in advance by turning-in the registration/scholarship firm but until all of the paperwork and tuition are collected as well as processed, business leaders are not considered enrolled. Enrollment takes place from 8 AM – 8:30 AM on the first day of the course (September 29, 2007) at Kennedy-King College. Please come to Building U, Room 140-142 on the first day of the course.

Business leaders that submit a registration form to the office of the Provost in advance will have priority for enrollment. $250 in tuition will be due on the first day of the course.
Cash and checks for tuition are the only acceptable forms of payment.
