Introduction
The City Colleges of Chicago have adopted a "student first" policy.
The policy is predicated on an awareness that student needs must be
understood and met.
Kennedy-King College and Dawson Technical Institute provide a host of
developmental, guidance, and advising activities designed to enhance
the college experience. A variety of scholarship opportunities exists
for students who demonstrate high potential for academic success, or
show athletic prowess or leadership skills. Inquire about these
opportunities by writing or calling the Admissions office.
Some of the services that students may find helpful in planning their
futures include orientation programs, financial aid, placement
testing, academic advising, job placement, admissions, career
guidance, college credit through examination, services for disabled
students, veterans affairs, child care, and student organizations. If
these services interest you, come to Kennedy-King College and take
advantage of a college dedicated to serving your needs.
Our mission is to become the "educational model of the Twenty First
Century." We intend to make our student service activities the best in
the business.
Let us prove it to you.
Academic
Advising
Members of the faculty serve as
Academic Advisors for students enrolled in their programs. Advisors
assist students in planning their academic programs and in selecting
courses. Advisors are available in the registration area during
registration periods and in their offices during the semester.
Admissions Office
The Admissions Office helps students
get into the college. From this office students obtain applications
for admission, information about registration, permits to register,
and registration kits. The Office of Admissions also refers new
students to college advisors for pre-enrollment assistance and to the
Barker Academic Center for assessment.
Assessment
All new Kennedy-King and Dawson
Technical Institute students and continuing or former students without
test scores on file are required to go through the assessment process.
At Kennedy-King College, students take a college placement test in the
Barker Academic Center which determines whether they need special
academic support services.
The test measures students' skills in reading, writing, and
mathematics. Faculty Advisors then make use of test results, student
career interests, and previous academic experience to advise students
about their academic programs. Dawson students are required to take
reading and mathematics placement tests.
Child Development Center
Both Kennedy-King College and Dawson Technical Institute maintain
Child Development Centers which are laboratory preschools offering
care to children ages two through five years. Services are available
to children of students, staff, and the community.
These centers provide practicum experiences for students in human
services areas and are available as a training resource to such
students. The Child Development Centers operate Monday through Friday,
and have both day and evening programs. Tuition is based on a sliding
scale and varies according to income.
College Advisors
College Advisors are available to
provide guidance services to prospective, current and returning
students to facilitate their successful matriculation through the
higher education process. College advisors assist students with the
Admissions and Registration processes, selection of courses towards
program completion, certificate and graduation evaluation.
College and
University Transfer Center
The College and University Transfer Center at Kennedy-King College
assists former students, graduates, and current students in
identifying, screening and selecting upper division (4 yr.) colleges
and universities to attend. Students will be supported in completing
procedures for transfer through direct assistance, workshops,
seminars, meetings with four year college representatives, and visits
to transfer institutions.
College Bookstore
The Kennedy-King Bookstore is located on the first level, west side of
the building. Textbooks for courses at Kennedy King, as well as
supplies, are available.
Disabled Student Services
The Disabled Student Services Office provides a variety of services to
students with physical and hearing disabilities. These services
include readers, note takers, personal care attendants, transcribers,
and adaptive equipment. This program is designed to bring disabled
students into the educational and social mainstream of college life.
It provides both students and faculty with information, assistance,
and encouragement to make sure that many barriers to education may be
recognized and removed.
Financial Aid Office
The Financial Aid Office helps students
obtain money to cover their educational expenses. Both full time and
part time students are able to receive financial aid if they qualify.
Most financial aid is based on need. Contact the Financial Aid Office
for further information.
Job Placement
The Job Placement Office assists
students in finding full time and part time employment.
Library
The Kennedy-King College Library
maintains an extensive collection of books, periodicals, and reference
materials for all areas of the college curriculum. Study rooms within
the library are available for class meetings and seminars. Librarians
assist students with individual research projects and provide
orientations to the library for classes. Internet access and
electronic databases are available for student research.
The Learning Resource Center at Dawson Technical Institute provides
trainees with educational support according to individual needs
through testing, modular instruction and tutoring services. A wide
range of specialized programs are available within the Center to
assist trainees who wish to enhance or improve their basic skills to
meet entrance and/or course requirements. The library provides books
and materials, services, and facilities necessary to complement and
support the classroom instruction.
The Audio Visual Center provides non print resources, such as
videocassettes and filmstrips, geared to the programs offered at
Dawson. NovaNET is a computer based education system which links
education with progressive technology and proven teaching methods to
prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow and provides services
for trainees in Nursing, Business and Commercial Technology, Caps,
Carpentry, Electronics, Skill Builders, and Welding. Walk in students
are also welcome. Modular instruction is available to trainees seeking
to improve their basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills.
Office of Academic Resources and Skills

has been designed to help students who need assistance with academic
work. The Center offers tutoring, NOVANET (Computer Assisted
Tutoring), Reading, Writing and Speech Labs, and Internet capable
computers to assist the college student population. Audiovisual
equipment is available through the Center for use in the classroom to
aid in instruction.
In addition to these facilities, several departments operate
