Associate in Fine Arts Degree (A.F.A.) 205, 208

The Associate in Fine Arts Degree (AFA) prepares individuals who intend to major in either Music education or Music performance to transfer to a four-year college or university. Completion of the AFA degree, however, does not fulfill the requirements of the Illinois General Education Core Curriculum. Students will need to complete the general education requirements of the institution to which they transfer. Students may be required to demonstrate skill levels through auditions and/or portfolio review at the institution to which they transfer.

The program requires the successful completion, with a minimum of an overall C (2.00) grade point average, of a total of 60 semester hours. All courses submitted for graduation must be numbered 101 or higher.

The course requirements for the Associate in Fine Arts Degree are consistent with the Illinois Articulation Initiative Fine Arts Panel model in relation to general education, prerequisites and fine arts specialty. Those specialty courses required that are not offered on our campus will be made available to our students through inter district cooperative agreements, or through telecommunications.

To transfer as a junior into a baccalaureate program with either a major in Music or Music Education, students should select one of the two options described below in consultation with a music department advisor. Completion of the AFA degree, however, does not fulfill the requirements of the Illinois General Education Core Curriculum. Students may need to complete additional general education requirements of the institution to which they transfer.

Transfer admission is competitive. Completion of one of the two options alone does not guarantee admission to either the baccalaureate program or to upper-division or specialty music courses. Students may be required to demonstrate skill level through auditions and placement testing at the institution to which they transfer. In some colleges and universities, a baccalaureate degree may also require competency in a foreign language.
