Introduction to Teacher Assistant
This course is one of the requirements of the Teacher's Assistant certificate program. It is designed to provide an introduction to the rules and duties, the responsibilities and expectations of the teacher's assistant in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). This should include an orientation to the profession of teaching; the role of the teacher and the teacher's assistant; current trends and problems in education, particularly in the CPS. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course. Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 01 and Math 121 or Consent of Department Chairperson. 150 minutes per week. 3 credit hours.

The Teaching of Reading
This course is one of the requirements of the "Teacher's Assistant" certificate program. It is designed to provide an introduction to the study of various methods of teaching reading in the elementary school. It will include an evaluation of current trends, aims, and practices, and methods and sequences in teaching reading skill development. Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 101 and Math 121 or Consent of Department Chairperson. 150 minutes per week. 3 credit hours.

Diagnosing Reading Problems
This course is one of the requirements of the Teacher's Assistant advanced certificate program. It is designed to provide an introduction to the study of methods of diagnosing reading difficulties and using corrective reading techniques. It includes instructional materials which can be utilized in the classroom or in small group settings to ve3rcome reading problems. Principles of Practice in Elementary Education

Practicum in Elementary Education
Students spend 20 hours per week, under supervision, as a teacher aide in primary grade classroom, 8 or 16 weeks; course includes 2 hour weekly seminar. Prerequisite: Completion of all Child Development and Elementary Education courses and consent of Department Chairperson; may not be taken concurrently with Education 260. 2 lecture and 20 lab hours per week. 3 or 6 credit hours.

Comparative study of philosophical views on the relationship of education to political institutions, social processes, material conditions and individual ideas.
