Pediatric Nursing
Basic pediatric nursing care: normal growth and development of the newborn, toddler, school age child and adolescent; identification of age specific developmental tasks; nursing care of children with congenital anomalies and common childhood diseases; dosages calculations for pediatric patients. Prerequisite: HT 513 or departmental approval. 4 credit hours.

HT 509
Obstetric Nursing
Study of male and female reproductive systems: conception and fetal development; labor and delivery: post partum complications; normal newborn with complications; medications commonly used in obstetrics; nutrition for prenatal and post partum patients; family planning. Prerequisite: HT 513 or departmental approval. 4 credit hours.

HT 510
Basic Nursing
Theory and clinical practice necessary to provide competent fundamental nursing care to patients in a health care facility. Prerequisite: HT 987, 988, 989, 990 or departmental approval. 8 credit hours.

HT 511
Anatomy and Physiology
Structure and function of the human body. Emphasis is placed on normal body physiology, including energy production and nutrition. Prerequisite: HT 987, 988, 989, 990, or departmental approval. 8 credit hours.

HT 512
Medical and Gerontological Nursing
Correlation of theoretical knowledge with clinical practice in providing nursing care for adult patients with endocrine, peripheral vascular disorders, infectious diseases, geriatrics, surgical, cancer, genital urinary and blood dyscrasias. Expansion of drug classifications and information on drug abuse, the apothecary system, metric system and IV therapy; principles of sterile techniques, physical, psychological, and emotional needs of patients; continued development of math and writing skills. Prerequisite: HT 510 and 511 or departmental approval. 12 credit hours.

HT 513
Medical Surgical Nursing
Correlation of theoretical knowledge with clinical practice in providing nursing for adult patients with various medical surgical conditions including neurological, cardiac, orthopedic, gastrointestinal, accessory, reproductive, eye and ear disorders and injuries requiring basic first aid. Study and application of the nursing process as the basis for meeting the physiological and psychological needs of the patient. Trainee implementation of prescribed medical and pharmacological treatments under the supervision of a physician, podiatrist, a registered nurse, or dentist. Continued development of math and writing skills. Prerequisite: HT 512 or departmental approval. 12 credit hours

HT 540
Nurse Assistant
Designed to provide trainees with the knowledge and skills needed to provide basic nursing care for patients in hospitals, nursing homes, private homes or other health care facilities, under the direction of a Practical/Professional Nurse. Trainees who complete this course are eligible for certification by the Illinois State Department of Public Health. 7 credit hours.

Pharmacology and Medication Administration
Current drug information and scientific knowledge regarding the use of drugs as an important health care modality; role and responsibilities of Licensed Practical Nurse in preparation, administration and monitoring of medications; drug therapies and their effects on specific body systems; calculation of drug doses; drug actions, reactions and contraindications; safe practice of preparing and administering drugs and monitoring response to drug therapy. Prerequisite: HT 508 and 509 or departmental approval. 4 credit hours.

Introduction to Health Science
Elementary concepts in anatomy, physiology and nutrition. Improvement of reading comprehension skills through assigned readings. 2 credit hours.

Communications for Nurses
Introductory courses in medical terminology. 2 credit hours.

HT 989
Mathematics for Nurses
Review of elementary mathematics and introduction to drug dosage calculations; reading and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; solution of ratio and proportion problems. 2 credit hours.

HT 990
Psychology for Nurses
Elementary principles of psychology; includes activities promoting increased awareness of alterations in human behavior and the need for health care providers to respond appropriately to behavior patterns of others. 2 credit hours.
