Courses are generally offered in seven week or shorter sessions (i.e. one day seminars) that meet days, evenings, and weekends at the college and in off-campus, community-based locations such as schools, senior centers, community centers, and churches.
Non-credit courses, workshops, symposia, and forums are among programs offered in concert with community agencies and organizations. General Studies courses, the name applied to continuing education classes, are approved by the Illinois Community College Board. These Continuing Education Units (CEU) of credit are applicable to certain certificates upon successful completion of a program but do not apply to the associate degree.
Additionally, the Division of Continuing Education is a provider of training for a number of industry-related certified programs such as: Phlebotomy Technician, Food Service Sanitation, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Billing and Coding, Medical Office Assistant, and Certified Nursing Assistant.
Continuing Education courses are designed to meet the demanding schedules of life and work. The majority of courses are offered on campus but others are offered off-campus at sites throughout the community at flexible times and at affordable rates. Through short-term training, the Division offers programs to upgrade skills, economic performance and provide personal enrichment for persons who wish to obtain knowledge and learn new skills.
Many courses have been tailored to meet the requirements of older adults and senior citizens. Preparation for retirement and new careers is emphasized. Self-awareness, self-esteem, and new attitudes toward the normal aging process are developed through class participation. Senior citizens learn of many new avenues open to them, of special services available to them, and of services they can offer to society. Social action and social issues may be studied and cultural attainment is explored through a variety of fine arts courses.
Hobby and special interest courses are reviewed and changed to meet the interests of adults and children. These include calligraphy, photography, dancing, cookery, magic, languages, sign language, computer courses, youth summer programs, jewelry making, and arts and crafts courses. Additionally, special classes for the hearing impaired are available. Various symposiums and community forums are featured throughout the year.
