Washburne Culinary Institute is part of the City Colleges of Chicago. To be admitted to Washburne, you must first apply to Kennedy-King College, in person.
The Registrar’s Office of Kennedy-King College is located in the administrative building at 6301 South Halsted. Registrar’s Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9am to 7 pm and Friday, 9am to2 pm. There is a free parking lot at 65th and Halsted.
New Students
- Submit an Admissions Data Form to the Office of Admissions and Records, in person at Kennedy-King College (no application fee).
- An official high school transcript that includes your final semester. It must show that you have graduated. If you have earned high school equivalency through GED examinations, you must submit official GED results.
- Show proof of residency, such as a Voter's Registration Card, State ID or Driver's License.
- Take the College's placement examinations. Official ACT scores for High School graduates can be used in place of placement tests if the official ACT transcript is received.
If you do not have college level English and math or have ACT scores that are less than two years old, you will need to take a placement test. You can download free study guides for the Compass test. You must score at Reading 125, English 100 and Math 98 to start our program. If you have completed college English and math classes, be sure that you request an official transcript from the school where you took the classes as that will be required.- Attend a new student orientation.
Transfer Students
Students transferring credits to Kennedy-King College from another college (including other City Colleges) or university, must complete the following steps:
- Submit an Admissions Data Form to the Office of Admissions and Records, in person at Kennedy-King College (no application fee).
- Have your official transcript from high school and all accredited institutions previously attended sent directly from each school to the Office of Admissions and Records
- Students enrolling for a summer session only need proof of previous college attendance. If enrolling in English or math, proof of completing the prerequisite must be provided.
- Attend a new student orientation.
Former Students of Washburne or Kennedy-King College
Former students who temporarily discontinued attendance at this college and who were in good academic standing upon leaving will need to file an updated Admission Data Form. If another college was attended in the interim, it will be necessary to have that college send a transcript directly to the Office of Admissions and Records.
Students Not in Good Scholastic Standing
Former students who have been academically excluded from any of the City Colleges of Chicago must petition for re-admission. Prior to the beginning of open registration, petitions for re-admission are available at the Advisement Center.
Because we are part of the City Colleges of Chicago, we are able to offer tuition at a greatly reduced price. While the other culinary colleges in Chicago cost between $45,000 and $50,000 for an associate of applied science degree at Washburne is only $13,000 for the entire program! Our fee also includes all your culinary books, uniforms and knife or pastry kit. There are no hidden costs. The only additional items you will have to pay for are your general education books. Tuition for these classes is included, but book costs.
There are generous scholarships available to qualified students. Many of our students are able to graduate with little or no debt. If you want to apply for financial aid, you must complete FAFSA online.
